چکیده

We report on the temporal and spectral characteristics of the early X-ray emission from the Gamma Ray Bursts GRB050126 and GRB050219A as observed by Swift. The X-ray light-curves of these 2 bursts both show remarkably steep early decays (F(t) ∝ t−3), breaking to flatter slopes on timescales of a few hundred seconds. For GRB050126 the burst shows no evidence of spectral evolution in the 20-150 keV band, and the spectral index of the γ-ray and X-ray afterglows are significantly different suggesting a separate origin. By contrast the BAT spectrum of GRB050219A displays significant spectral evolution, becoming softer at later times, with Γ evolving toward the XRT photon index seen in the early X-ray afterglow phase. For both bursts, the 0.2-10 keV spectral index preand post-break in the X-ray decay light-curve are consistent with no spectral evolution. We suggest that the steep early decline in the X-ray decay light-curve is either the curvature tail of the prompt emission; X-ray flaring activity; or external forward shock emission from a jet with high density regions of small angular size (> Γ−1). The late slope we associate with the forward external shock.

Physical processes shaping GRB X-ray afterglow lightcurves: theoretical implications from the Swift XRT observations

With the successful launch of the Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer, a rich trove of early X-ray afterglow data has been collected by its on-board X-Ray Telescope (XRT). Some interesting features are emerging, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more “normal” decay component observed in...

Observations of X-ray Flares from Gamma Ray Bursts

Swift-XRT observations of the X-ray emission from gamma ray bursts (GRBs) and during the GRB afterglow have led to many new results during the past two years. One of these exciting results is that ∼1/3− 1/2 of GRBs contain detectable X-ray flares. The mean fluence of the X-ray flares is ∼10× less than that of the initial prompt emission, but in some cases the flare is as energetic as the prompt...

THE DISCOVERY OF THE OPTICAL AND NEAR-IR AFTERGLOWS OF THE FIRST Swift GAMMA-RAY BURSTS

We present optical and near-infrared searches for afterglow emission from the first four Swift bursts with accurate positions from the X-ray Telescope (XRT). Using telescopes at Las Campanas, Keck, and Palomar observatories we rapidly identified and followed up afterglows for three of the four bursts. The burst positions were also observed with the Very Large Array, but no radio afterglow emiss...

Panchromatic study of GRB 060124: from precursor to afterglow

We present observations of GRB 060124, the first event for which both the prompt and the afterglow emission could be observed simultaneously and in their entirety by the three Swift instruments. Indeed, Swift-BAT triggered on a precursor ∼ 570 s before the main burst peak, and this allowed Swift to repoint the narrow field instruments to the burst position ∼ 350 s before the main burst occurred...

A : High Energy Observations of the GRB Prompt and Afterglow Emission

Swift discovered GRB 050713A and slewed promptly to begin observing with its narrow field instruments 72.6 seconds after the burst onset, while the prompt gamma-ray emission was still detectable in the BAT. Simultaneous emission from two flares is detected in the BAT and XRT. This burst marks just the second time that the BAT and XRT have simultaneously detected emission from a burst and the fi...
